Enrolment options

Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

The basics of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) (via the software Matlab and AutoCAD)

The basics of Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), primarily Finite Element Method (FEM) (via the software Matlab and RFEM)

The basics of parametric design and engineering (via the software Matlab, Geogebra and Rhinoceros)

On top of the basics, structural engineers need to be aware of tools that are needed to complete a project which typically consists of different phases:

    • Project formulation
    • Initial brief
    • Assembling the data and developing the brief
    • Scheme design
    • Detailed design
    • Information for construction
    • Construction

During the sheme design phase, different design options can be explored using a parametric design software.  During the detailed design phase, the structural elements need to be designed in detail and this is achieved through the FEM software. After the detalied design is completed, the information for construction is communicated using a computer-aided design software.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

lectures, reading assignments, guided exercice sessions, personal homework assignments

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Lecture sessions (contact teaching): 6 x 2 x 2 h = 24 h

    Exercise sessions (contact teaching): 6 x 2 x 2 h = 24 h

    Home assignments (self-studies): 6 x N x M h = 84 h
