Topic outline

  • NOTE! CHEM-A1610 Design Meets Biomaterials (3-5 ECTS) will be organized for the last time in spring 2024. A new substituting course, CHEM-A1630 CHEMARTS Basics (3 ECTS), will be organized as a part of curriculum 2024-2026 twice a year in periods I and IV.

CHEM-A1610 Design Meets Biomaterials is an introductory course to CHEMARTS and open to any Aalto student to participate. There are no prerequisites, only open mindset, curiosity to biomaterials and design, and commitment to work in multidisciplinary groups is required. The main objective of CHEMARTS is to inspire students and researchers to explore biomaterials together and to create new concepts for the future use of cellulose and other biomaterials. In CHEMARTS students have freedom to create and fail – and to succeed. In addition to the learning experience, CHEMARTS students prepare biomaterial samples that have got great visibility through participation in exhibitions and competitions.

After completing CHEM-A1610 Design Meets Biomaterials you can continue with the other CHEMARTS courses, MUO-E0102 CHEMARTS Summer School (6 ECTS) (organized for the last time in summer 2024) and CHEM-E0180 CHEMARTS Project (5-10 ECTS) (organized for the last time in summer 2024, will be replaced by a new course MUO-E0019 CHEMARTS Project 5-10 ECTS organized in periods II-III and V-VI in curriculum 2024-2026). These courses can also make part of CHEMARTS minor in your degree. Note that the CHEMARTS minor will be discontinued in curriculum 2024-2026 and therefore can only be completed if you have started completing the minor before the start of the new curriculum.

The laboratory works of the course will take place in Vuorimiehentie 1 and are scheduled on several weekdays. Students will attend only one of the alternative timeslots. The alternative weekly times are: Wednesday morning (9-12), Wednesday afternoon (13-16), Thursday morning (9-12), Thursday afternoon (13-16), Friday morning (9-12) and Friday afternoon (13-16). The laboratory works will begin on week 11 and continue until week 17 (During the spring break and evaluation week of period IV there will be no scheduled lab work). More information on the laboratory works will be given during the first lecture on 1.3.

NOTE! CHEM does not allow anyone to work in its laboratory spaces without first passing CHEM's laboratory safety exam. If you have not passed the exam earlier, you need to enroll on virtual CHEM-E0140 Laboratory Safety course (https://mycourses.aalto.fi/course/view.php?id=39688) and pass the online exam (DL for completing the exam 3.3.2024). Registration from Sisu to MyCourses takes overnight, therefore you need to register to the course in Sisu latest on the previous day before completing the exam.

NOTE! Aalto will not take part in the international Biodesign challenge competition this year and therefore we will not select a team from this course to take part in the competition.
