Topic outline

  • CHEM-E1120 Thermochemical Processes (5 cr) provides a general introduction to thermochemical conversions of plant biomass, lignocellulose, and its components with a focus on a specific conversion or process. In 2024, the focus will be on energy storage applications from lignocellulosic raw materials, such as lignin and cellulose. The first weeks of the course will be used to understand the state-of-the-art research and the proposed processing routes. The second half will consider how the research findings can be translated into a preliminary process design, risk assessment and sustainability value proposition. During the course, students will work in groups (March and April) on tasks given during the lectures. In the end, the groups will present the outcome of their work in a seminar.

The course will be taught by professors Luana Dessbesell and Tapani Vuorinen.
