    Introduction to the Entrepreneurship Law course


    Welcome to "Entrepreneurship Law” course. 


    IF YOU WONDER WHETER THIS COURSE IS FOR YOU, THE ANSWER IS YES!

    This course is designed to give you a practical understanding of the legal opportunities and challenges you'll face as an entrepreneur, especially in Finland. Whether you're dreaming of starting a café or a tech startup, you'll learn how to navigate the legal landscape successfully using legal tools to reach your entrepreneurial goals.  


    What Will You Learn? 

    Proactive law and systems thinking: You will understand how human, economic, and legal systems interact and how solving the human and economic challenges often also solves the legal problems you might be facing. 

    The potential roles of the companies in your life and your role in these companies.  

    Foundation in Law: Get the basic legal toolkit you need to kickstart your business venture. 

    Different Areas of Law: Understand key legal topics such as contracts, company structure, intellectual property, taxes, and employee rights. 

    Business Structures: Discover what kind of business structure suits your entrepreneurial needs—be it a sole proprietorship, partnership, or a limited liability company. 

    Intellectual Property: Understand how to protect your innovations and ideas. 

    Employment Law: Make sure your hiring process complies with Finnish employment regulations. 

    Data Protection: Understand data protection is essential for every entrepreneur both for the opportunities and risks it links to.

    Practicalities for Spring 2024  

    For the Spring 2024 term, "Entrepreneurship Law in Practice" will be available as a course worth 6 ECTS credits, stretching across teaching periods IV and V. The course is divided into two parts. The first part consists of independent studying supported by videos and assignments. The second part will concentrate on putting your knowledge into practice. You will work on a legal business plan designed for a hypothetical start-up.

    The course kicks off on 28.2.2024 with the intro session at the campus.  Additional information will be given in the intro session. 

    Please note: 

    • while the first part of the course is mostly online, you will be required to attend three group sessions at the campus: the dates for these sessions are 28.2.2024, 10.04.2024 and 08.05.2024. Participation is mandatory, exemptions are granted on a case by case basis  for justified reasons (eg. medical reason) provided the teachers are informed in advance.  
    • an interim exam  will be held between 15.4.2024 and 19.4.2024 in the exam rooms. This is essential for continuing the second part of the course
    • oral exams will be organized at the end of the course at the campus, dates will be communicated during the course.

    Effort and Time Management:

    • First part: Expect to dedicate 80 hours over seven weeks, which translates to about 10 to 12 hours per week. The nature of the coursework requires consistent effort; it's unrealistic to cram 80 hours into the final week. Following the recommended timetable is advisable for a smooth progression.

    • Second part: Similarly, the second part requires 80 hours of commitment, involving group tasks. Details will be shared in the intro session.


    This framework emphasizes consistent work and proper time management as keys to navigating the course effectively.
