Sculpture Now – Place and Place Making
This year Sculpture Now! course concentrates on place and narrative through the case of Arctification.
Place and narrative are an umbrella and Arctification a special case giving you a perspective of place and its significance on different stakeholders. You can approach the umbrella theme from more personal or from wider, societal perspective. We have readings (one mandatory) in respect of the special case of Arctification produced by researchers specialized on the subject, giving you an opportunity to dive into the subject deeply. Apart from the mandatory article which you will receive as a copy, the readings are produced as pdf files to be found on our course home page. Your work of art, however, does not have to handle the particular case, the main subject is place and narrative.
Special event: this course curriculum includes a performance by Ari Björn, Alix Varnajot, Albina Pashkevich and Outi Autti / Thora Herrmann. The performance will take place at Kuva/Tila in UniArts Helsinki as part of the Claws and connections – all the world’s senses exhibition.
Approach
Sculpture and Transitive approach = other techniques and ways of producing art falling into category of 3-dimensional art, or allowing us to interpret the output in respect of 3-dimensional art.
From the media perspective your approach can vary from sculptural object to installation. Your piece can also have performative depth. There are no limits to materials that can be used, apart from those practical ones such as cost and time. Students wishing to participate should have a good prior knowledge and experience of making contemporary art and be prepared to work at least one other day on their course project.
