    Welcome to the  Design Impact II course. 

    The teachers of the course are Graphic Designer and Lecturer Päivi Helander &  Industrial Designer, Professor of Practice Irina Viippola. 

    We will meet on Mondays (mornings) and Wednesdays (full days) in different classrooms. After Vappu on Friday 3rd we will have a field trip to Tapiola and Emma Museum.

    The calendar will help you to find the right room. Please, notice that there can be some changes in the rooms, too. These will be announce during the classes.

    • WEEK 1

      Monday 22.4. 9.15-12: Course Introduction

      Introduction to the topic and working process. 

      The group will be divided into three working groups, with several teams: 

      1. WP1: Magazines / Zines (Päivi) 
      2. WP2: Exhibition Design (Irina & Päivi)
      3. WP3: Workshop Facilitation (Irina)

      Everyone will learn from all the three themes and contribute to them, but for each theme there will be a a core working group responsible of three deliverables of the course.

      Thursday 2.5 12:00 submit your essay title / working title

      Friday 3.5. 12-17 Field Trip to Tapiola and Emma Museum

      Form groups of 4-6 students, fill in you name in the desired group: FILE

      Submit your group work by Monday 6th (bottom of this section). Photos & short descriptive text.

      Basics of editorial design: Grids, fonts, illustrative elements

      Deadline of the first essay draft (MAX 1000 words!) latest Friday 10.5 10:00.

      Deadline of visual moodboard of the editorial.

      Wednesday 15.5. Publication Design  with Päivi
      Structuring a publication – look & feel, scale and hierarchy
      Bring a printout 1/1 page size of your both layout-versions to the class (2-pager, 4-pager)

      Essay final version due Friday 17.5 12:00.

      Monday 20.5. 9.15-12 Economic value of design with Irina 

      Preliminary brief for the workshop and exhibition design teams.

      Guest lecturer Antti Ainamo: "Case Marimekko as a story of how good design is good business"


      Wednesday 22.5. 
      Starting 10:30
      Publication Design 5 with Päivi
      Preprint, layouting, testprint, structure

      Layout final versions due 22.5. at 10:30. We'll go through the layouts in the class as printouts, final delivery during the same day.

      Final adjustments for the individual layout.

      Monday 27.5. 9.15-12:00 Planning an event with Irina/Päivi

      Presentation of the magazine covers (can be still a draft)

      Presentation of the event / exhibition visuality (can be still a draft)

      Note. The invitation should be ready on Friday 31.5 at 10:00 so that we can start sending it (jpg or pdf).

      Monday 3.6: 

      10.30-12 Exhibition and workshop team meeting in Väre Q101

      14:00 Publication team meeting (if needed): print files check and delivery to Eila (latest 15:00)

      Layout and production teams should be checking Eila's comments if changes needed.
