  • Architecture and Film

Architectural Principles and Theory, Architectural studio 1 ARK-E1502

Architecture and Film focuses on the portrayal of architecture and spaces in films and the connections, similarities and differences between the two disciplines. By examining the intersection of these two fields, the studio encourages approaching architecture from new perspectives and exploring different tools for working, and as catalysts for discussion. We suggest that architects can benefit from viewing architecture and lived spaces from the viewpoint of filmmakers, and therefore we invite students to join us and ask 'What can films tell us about architecture, and what can architects say about films?'

During the course, we will watch films, as well as discuss and write about them. We will be watching a variety of different films which reflect the time and place of their making. Their content may be challenging and imperfect, but the objective is to analyze and dissect, rather than to construct or endorse. Students are expected to discuss the films basing their arguments on observation. The course does not have a single final submission, but instead multiple smaller assignments ranging from writing to drawing and making short films. Course evaluation is based on assignments as well as participation in discussions.
