Topic outline

  • About this course

In this course, project teams of three to five students work on real problems posed by firms and governmental research institutions. The teams apply operations research methods to solve these problems. They also develop their teamwork, communication, and project management skills.

In addition to using OR methods to solve problems, the teams produce project plans and interim reports, present their results in a final report, improve their presentation skills, and learn from the work of the other participating project teams. Also, several excursions will be made to client organizations.

The first meeting of the seminar will be held on Friday, 12 January 2024, from 12:15 to 15:00 in room Y344 (Otakaari 1). In this meeting, the course practicalities and general principles are presented (see the Course materials-tab). The clients present their topics, and project teams are formed based on the students' expressions of interest in working on these topics.

The topics, clients, and project deliverables of previous seminars can be found under the "Deliverables of previous seminars" -tab.

Students interested in this course should register as early as possible in SISU to ensure enough topics can be prepared. If a topic cannot be provided to all registered students, then students are admitted to the course in order of registration.

The course has four mandatory meetings in periods III-V. The first meeting will be held on
13 January. The three later meetings will be held in March, April, and May in connection with excursions to client organizations.
