Enrolment options

Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  • ILO1: Use a related software for building energy modeling (IDA-ICE).
  • ILO2: Describe imperatives for an energy efficient building.
  • ILO3: Choose phases and principal techniques of the design process concerning energy efficient buildings.
  • ILO4: Analyze, simulate and evaluate the resource consumption and overall energy efficiency of buildings with main focus on  the role of different aspects of building physics.
  • ILO5: Demonstrate the role, techniques, integration and control of building services systems in creating and maintaining energy efficient buildings.
  • ILO6: Learn to work in a team through groupwork, and to disseminate the results clearly and efficiently by means of written reports (conference papers) and seminars in front of an audience.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

This course deals with the tools, methodologies, and processes required for designing, building and operating sustainable buildings, as well as for evaluating their energy efficiency and environmental performance in various stages of their operation and life. The course is intended to cover the followings subjects: the design process, generic design strategies for low-carbon buildings, energy efficient HVAC-systems, low energy approaches for thermal control of buildings, energy efficient electrical systems, controls and metering, electric power load assessment, energy modelling, indoor conditions and energy.

This is a research-oriented course: heat transfer as well as building design fundamentals are assumed to be already known. The students will engage in reading specific journal articles, solving some energy balance calculations, participating in group work aimed at writing conference papers. They will also perform individual computer simulations of energy efficiency.

    Content:

    - Introduction to Load Calculations

    - Load and annual energy calculations

    - Thermal comfort and radiation

    - Principles of NZEB design

    - Technical solutions for energy efficient buildings

    - EPC and Energy policy, Exergy

A comprehensive training of a software for building energy modeling (IDA-ICE) is an important part of the course.

    Study load:

    1. Contact teaching = 27h (6×2h+5×3h)
    2. Weekly Assignments = 24h (8×3h)
    3. Student group seminar = 27h (group work + student seminar + report preparation)
    4. Simulation software = 44h (3×3h tutoring sessions + 35h simulation project)
    5. Learning diary blog = 10h (5×2h)
    6. Additional reading = 3h

    Total: 135h.

  • applies in this implementation

    EDIT Autumn Term II, 2024:

    1. Contact teaching = 24h (12×2h)
    2. Weekly Assignments = 21h (7×3h)
    3. Student group seminar = 32h (group work + student seminar + report preparation)
    4. Simulation software = 45h (5×2h tutoring sessions + 35h simulation project)
    5. Learning diary blog = 10h (5×2h)
    6. Additional reading = 3h

    Total: 135h

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

No final written examination. The assessment is cumulative continuous.

Lectures, weekly exercises, learning diary blog, individual simulation report, group project. The final mark (0-5, on a non-linear scale) will be shared as follows:

30% from calculation and reading assignments given at lectures.

    25% from the software project.

25% from the group report and Energy efficiency group seminar.

10% from the weekly learning diary blog.

Extra points will be given for full attendance to teaching events, extra reading, extra exercises, course feedback.

  • applies in this implementation

    EDIT Autumn Term II, 2024:

25% from calculation and reading assignments given at lectures.

35% from the IDA-ICE software project.

25% from the group report and Energy Conference.

5% from the weekly learning diary blog.

5% from full attendance to teaching events.

    8% from extra exercises.

    2% from course feedback.

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    1. Teaching sessions are divided into 3 groups: theory lectures, exercise sessions and software sessions. The IDA-ICE software sessions are hands-on tutorials which cover the software rudiments as well as exercises and assignments. The software training will culminate in an individual simulation project.

    2. The students are arranged into groups to which specific topics according to the core content are assigned. Such groups have to carry out some review work on the assigned topic, also adding computer simulations with IDA-ICE if possible. They will then prepare a written report in the form of a proper scientific conference article, which will be presented with a group presentation during the last lecture “Energy efficiency group seminar”.

    3. After each theory lecture, every week one topic will be selected, and a corresponding learning blog entry will be created. The students will contribute to the discussion, expanding on the topic and also elaborating about what was clear, what was not so
clear and should be covered also the next time.
