LEARNING OUTCOMES

After the completion of the course the student is able to

  • understand the general context of water and environmental engineering field and its relation to working life practices [knowledge]
  • define the concept of sustainability and understand how scientific, political and regulative frameworks direct the implementation of sustainability in field specific contexts [knowledge]

  • identify, analyse and solve practical challenges in WAT field from a sustainability viewpoint [skill]

  • apply the knowledge and skills gained from previous studies to a practical project [skill]

  • define the elements of project management, the stakeholders of a project, and implement a project in a given time frame [knowledge & skill]

  • disseminate project results in a consise way and with an entrepreneurial mindset [identity]

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    During the course student groups solve a sustainability-related case delivered by working life actors in the WAT field, and report the work orally and also briefly in written form. There are few compulsory contact sessions for the whole class that contribute to students' team work skills, understanding of sustainability as a concept, futures thinking abilities, and to creating the final presentation. Otherwise the group members are expected to organize their work independently during the course and agree on meetings with their mentors, who are representatives from the WAT field.

    Course grade is based on group and individual assignments and final seminar presentation.

Workload

    Contact sessions including tutored group work, interactive lectures and a seminar. Independent studying: group assignments and individual reflection tasks. Totally 135 h

    Registration for Course on Sisu (sisu.aalto.fi). A limited number of students will be accepted to the course, with preference given to our own WAT Master's degree students. Other students may be selected based on a Motivation Letter and/or other criteria. The course may not be organized if fewer than 5 students enroll in the course.
