LEARNING OUTCOMES
Overview: The student gains an overview of multiphase flow submodels used in many simulation software in energy conversion applications. In particular, the focus is on simulating chemically reactive processes such as hydrogen combustion and other types of multiphase flows with particles. The student can explain the physical principles behind simulation models and carry out simulations in Cantera and Matlab. The background multiphase flow simulation approaches used in advanced CFD codes are learned in simplified simulation setups.
Droplets and particles: The student understands liquid droplet/bubble/particle submodeling field and can use Matlab to write small programs to simulate motion, vaporization and breakup of particles with relevance to various multiphase flows in energy conversion applications.
Chemical reaction and combustion modeling in 0d: The student can apply the Cantera software to model thermodynamics of chemical reactions/combustion processes with relevance to various chemically reacting processes such as hydrogen or other e-fuel energy conversion.
Premixed combustion in 1d: The student can apply the Cantera software to model 1d flame propagation and flame speed with relevance to combustion and emissions.
Non-premixed combustion and mixing: The student can explain the difference between different modes of combustion and also simulate a 2d mixing problem with a provided Matlab code.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
valid for whole curriculum period:
The course is intended for students who want to become experts in simulating reactive flows encountered e.g. in energy conversion of hydrogen and other e-fuels. The course offers a systematic walk-through to theory, simulation and modeling of chemically reactive multiphase flow systems encountered in various energy conversion processes. Typically such processes can involve fluid flow and mixing, droplets/bubbles/particles, chemically reacting systems with exothermic reactions (combustion). Understanding such multiphase flows is relevant for improved fluid system operation, experimental work and numerical design by CFD methods. By completing five assignments, the student learns basics of particle submodel implementation, to simulate different fluid flows with provided Matlab code, and numerically investigate chemical reactions with relevance to sustainable modern combustion concepts. After the course the student can apply the information in experimentally and computationally oriented research and development context. The learned skills offer a solid foundation for utilizing CFD codes for chemically reactive energy conversion processes.
