LEARNING OUTCOMES

After successfully completing the course, the students are able to:

  1. Discuss, plan and justify the involvement of users in design with appropriate vocabulary and theory grounding;
  2. Identify and exemplify the main approaches of human-centered design (usability, codesign, user experience, interaction design, design ethnography, accessibility, socially responsible design);
  3. Critically evaluate the applicability of various human-centred design approaches in particular cases and contexts;
  4. Communicate human-centred and collaborative design-related topics for academic audiences.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The course gives an introduction to the vocabulary, background and methodology of usability, design ethnography, user experience, co-design, interaction design, service design, accessibility and socially responsible design. It gives students a covering understanding of the different orientations under the broad umbrella of human-centred and collaborative design. Students learn the backgrounds and fundamentals of the orientations as well as methodological approaches. After the course, the student is capable of discussing the involvement of users in design with appropriate vocabulary and theory grounding. The student learns to understand the applicability of various approaches, be critical with the ways users are involved and user data applied. They learn to find information about human-centred design. After the course, the students know the contemporary topics of research in the area of human centred and collaborative design. The students learn to communicate collaborative design related topics for an academic audience.
