LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret and interpret networking and communication protocols using microcontrollers and networking modules.
  2. Interpret and implement design and programming protocols to create a graphical user interface (GUI).
  3. Develop and implement a project plan with a defined scope.
  4. Apply time management techniques to their project development.
  5. Summarise and communicate the essence of their project development.
  6. Demonstrate 2D & 3D modelling capabilities applied to their own designs.
  7. Select and apply appropriate additive and subtractive techniques in digital fabrication to create prototypes, experiments, products, and other tangible objects.
  8. Demonstrate competence in design, fabrication, and programming of microcontroller circuit boards, including input and output devices.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    This course is one of three Digital Fabrication courses offered by Aalto Media Lab and Aalto Fab Lab. These courses run parallel to the global Fab Academy lectures and follow the same distributed educational model. The last course in the series focuses on developing a final project that demonstrates the skills and knowledge gained from the previous courses.

    The course also introduces tools, techniques, and processes for system integration, networking and communication protocols, and future possibilities for the development and dissemination of their projects and designs.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

    • Weekly assignments and documentation
    • Final Project development and documentation
    • The final grade is a weighted average of the weekly assignments and final project development.

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    The course uses a distributed educational model where part of the lectures are taught by our global partners and part of them are taught locally at the Aalto Fab Lab. The student is also required to spend a considerable amount of time doing independent studies and completing assignments.

    6–12 ECTS ≈ 160–320h

    • Remote teaching (global lectures): ~20h
    • Contact teaching (local lectures and demonstrations): ~20h
    • Independent work and completing the assignments: ~80–160h
    • Time to reflect and process the lectures): ~40h

    A successful completion of the course requires minimum of 80% attendance to the lectures and other contact teaching. Although part of the lectures are remote, this course cannot be completed remotely.
