On successful completion of this course, students
1 are familiar with various types of photographic books and comprehend the varied artistic, technical and material choices used in the design
2 have a basic understanding of designing and producing a photo publication and are able to apply this information in their own artistic work

Content

The aim of the course is to design a photographic publication and to make an artist book or a book dummy. The lectures introduce students to varied photographic books, the group discussions examine how different design choices may effect on the content and perception of the work, and how one's own artistic goals can be implemented in the form of a book. During the course, students will gain good knowledge of how to manage the relationship between image and text, how graphic layout affects the content of a book-like work, and what types of funding models are available for producing a photographic book.
Assessment Methods and Criteria

Participation in teaching, completed assignments.
Minimum 80% attendance.

Workload

6 ECTS ≈ 162h, contact teaching 62 h, independent work 100 h
Credits can be comprised of the course and designing and/or completing one's own photobook. In addition students can continue their work as an independent project and get additional study credits
according to their work load.
Contact teaching approx. 30-40 %: lectures, personal tutoring, critique.
Independent working 60-70 %: preparation for the lectures, completing assignments, preparation for critiques
In case the student is completing a photobook, the credits are evaluated according to the student’s workload, so
that 1 ects equals to approx. 27 hour’s independent work.
