LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1) Recognize and identify common chart types and know different genres of information design and their uses.

2) Produce visualizations and infographics that follow established principles of information design.

3) Have an understanding of how design solutions are affected by human perception and cognition.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    We look at mechanisms relevant to presenting abstract phenomena and statistical data, as well as visual communication of other kinds of information. We learn about the properties of human perception and design solutions that facilitate the effective communication of knowledge. We look at established genres of information design, such as maps, statistical graphics, network diagrams, and scientific illustrations. The coursework includes a short introductory assignment and a larger project work. In the project work the students will learn how to apply the theoretical principles discussed in a practical context.
