26.1.2024 Learning skills - preassigment
Preassignment: execute and answer the following tasks 1-3.
Use about four (4) hours of time for this part. In all cases write with full
sentences and constructive & narrative manner – i.e., no bullet points.
1. Imagine you doing a jigsaw puzzle (*). Consider the best strategy for doing the puzzle. What problems may occur while doing the puzzle? What kind of strategy would work the best? What is your approach when you have a random piece of the puzzle in your hand? What problems might occur if you would not know what picture the puzzle should have? What other problems may occur?
(*) You may do a jigsaw puzzle online in https://www.jigsawplanet.com/.
2. Consider now studying in a university course analogous for doing the jigsaw puzzle. In the case of the jigsaw puzzle, you should know what the “end result” should be (for instance, Eiffel tower or Sydney Opera House). In a university course, you know the “end result”: the learning outcomes of the course. Each piece of the puzzle is like piece of knowledge or skill that you should learn in the course. All the pieces have a specific location and they are related to each other etc. Using the analogy, write down what would be the best learning strategy for studying in a course so that you fulfill the learning outcomes in the end of the course. Also, consider what practical factors hinders you to study using the best possible learning strategy.
3. Familiarize yourself with the workshop material (slideset). Perform the tasks related to each case 1-9. Based on your answer in question 2, select one of the cases for more careful consideration. Read through the references given. Plan an experiment to test the teachings & ”take home” hints of the selected case in practice in a chosen course in the next week – i.e., execute your learning according to the case. Return a written plan of the experiment including at least the following details:
- which case did you choose,
- what are the goals of your experiment,
- on which days and course do you plan to execute your experiment,
- what are the concrete actions of your experiment,
- how do you “measure” the success of your experiment.
