A pavilion design consists of a simple roof slab floating above a plaza (compare situation). To enhance the idea of floating, only a minimum amount of slender steel columns should be used to support the roof slab. The roof is around 555 m2 in area and each column can carry the load of the roof in a radius of 6 m around the column. What is the minimum amount of columns that are required for the pavilion? And how do they have to be placed?
