Reflection 2 - Narrative Design / Game Writing part 1
Writing a reflection on each visiting lecturer’s talk is part of doing the course, and it’s also the main basis for grading the course. After each lecture, you should write a reflection to the Assignments section in MyCourses. The length of the reflection should be about 1 A4 page of text. In the reflection, you should write about thoughts that the lecture inspired, and also use at least one other source to get more information about the topic. The other source(s) can be for example a scientific article, an article on the internet about similar topics, a video about similar topics or even a game that you analyze from the perspective of the lecture (when applicable). Also mention the source at the end of the post.
The idea of the reflection is to stop and think about the topic of the lecture for yourself, and deepen your knowledge both through processing the themes of the lectures for yourself and through finding more information about the topic. It’s sometimes too easy to listen to a lecture and then just forget about it afterwards, so having to apply the concepts for yourself is important for learning. The style of the text doesn’t have to be scientific, but it can be. When grading, I’m more interested in seeing that you have really thought about the topics and are able to apply them in your own thinking. There are other courses where a more scientific style of writing is studied – but again, if you find a good scientific view to some of the topics, that’s great too. And even if this isn’t a scientific writing exercise, it’s good to tell your sources.
If you miss a lecture, you should still write the reflection – in this case, use at least 2 other sources about the topic of the lecture.
The deadlines of the reflections are always before the next course session, so the reflection should be returned latest 13.15 when the next session starts. The deadline of the last lecture reflection is two weeks after the lecture, as there is a workshop week after the last lecture week.
If you return something late, it will give a penalty to your grade. Every reflection that is late, will decrease your grade by 0,25, unless you agree on a later date because of a good reason (being sick etc.). If it’s late more than a week, you get a bigger penalty. Even if you are late, you will have to still return the reflection later – so please put a time to your calendar to do this in time. I believe this is a good chance to learn more about important topics in game design!
