Session 12 STUDY MATERIALS: metadiscourse
By working through these materials, you will learn about the role of metadiscourse in presentations and the different types of transitions/signposts. This session will help you complete A5 by adding the main transition sentences to the outline as indicated in the template.
READING 1: Go to Keeping your speech moving
Read about the functions of metadiscourse in oral presentations and the
different types of transition sentences and signposts. This site
provides especially good information and examples of how to transition
between the main topic areas - or main points - when presenting,
The
longer, more informative transitional sentences between main topic areas
often verbalise both the shift of
attention to something new and the focus of the main point that will
be discussed next. When discussing items on the same slide, eg. lists, shorter
signposts/transitions are commonly used to progress coherently through
the ideas.
READING 2: Go to Speech transitions
Expand your knowledge on different functions and types of
transitions/signposts. The list of examples on this site partially
overlaps with that provided above, but especially items 7-12 may give you
some new ideas as well.
TO SUM UP,...
Check
the slides attached below, TO SUM UP,... (Metalanguage), including one small example of using transitions when
discussing the information on one slide (NB. the slide content is from
the speaker's outline,
not from the final slide show).
More of useful phraseology is available in section Materials, under PRESENTATION SKILLS/ Language aids: presentations (
Referring to graphs and figures and Metalanguage for presenters).
EXAMPLE PRESENTATION Pankaj
Ghemawat: Actually, the world isn't flat
Watch
and listen. Pay attention to using transitions and signposting to
reflect the train of thought and the structure of the presentation.
FINALLY, move on to completing the presentation outline assignment A5. Submit the filled in template according to A5 instructions by Sunday 4.10.!.
