Group Assignment: Phase 3 - Crisis and collapse of Nokia's business (+ DEBATE PREPARATION) (DL 1.12. 23:00)
NOTE: the below is still unconfirmed information from previous course. However, it is indicative of the Phase 3 contents this year too. The differences will mostly be how the submission for Phase 3 supports the Final Debate held on 6th lecture - and how it takes place in online format which we have not yet finalised. Therefore these details are still subject change and to be confirmed.
In this phase 3 you will submit two files:
1: Analyze and discuss the main reasons that you deem may have contributed to Nokia’s decline and eventual collapse, such as the internal factors (e.g. strategic decisions, style of management, communication, organizational culture), and factors that took place externally (e.g. the changes and shifts in technology and business environment).
2: Prepare arguments both for and against three high-level viewpoints to why Nokia Mobile Phones fell:
- Management of technological innovation and technology development
- Did Nokia fall behind / fail in developing and managing technology and technological innovation? Were the strategic choices justifiable and/or was is just bad execution?
- Platform economy, ecosystems and technology platforms strategy and management
- How Nokia fared in the business disruption ignited by newcomers to the industry? Were the strategic choices justifiable and/or was is just bad execution?
- Management, organizational, and cultural issues
- Was the fall due to leadership and organizational management and cultural issues?
This (2) is preparation to the FINAL DEBATE on 3.12. - READ the more detailed instructions on how to prepare for the debate from Lectures and Schedule.
Base your analysis especially on the theories and concepts you have learned on the course. This includes lecture and online materials.
Submission DL 1.12. 23:00
1: You should add the analysis you do in this phase to the same document you submitted in the previous phase. The analysis report should meet the following criteria:
- Submitted as a PDF
- Max 2-3 additional pages + possible appendices (like reference list) and a cover page (with info: assignment phase, date, group number, member names)
- Single line-spacing
- Font size 12
- Used sources to be cited and listed as references following some consistent citation notation
2: The arguments for and against can be a free-form, whatever way would help your team for the debate (read the debate instructions from Lectures and Schedule). This could be e.g. bulleted list of issues, mind maps, just text - whatever works best for you. The file should include a similar cover page as other phases have had, though. Check Lecture 6 for an idea of how the debate will unfold.
NOTE: This phase contributes directly to the final report.
