Thematic Studies on Sámi Culture
During the first part of the studio you will study different areas of Sámi culture through lectures and your own research work. You will work in groups gathering information and producing a presentation to be shared with others.
The first presentations will be for our own group to deepen our understanding of the arts in Sámi culture and the second ones will be a form of sharing what we have learnt with the South African group.
Each group will collect information on their topic and produce a 25 min presentation. Include images, video, sound etc. to bring your topic to life. Remember to list your sources for the information and images.
The presentations will be recorded and shared with the group on MyCourses as a resource for further studies. You can prepare your presentation as a prerecorded video or perform it live.
We will gather a list of references for you to get started on your research on Mycourses. Some of the sources are unfortunately only in Finnish, each group has at least one Finnish speaking member to make sure all information can be accessed. One good general source to get you started is prof. Veli-Pekka Lehtola's web page with a lot of links to different sources on Sámi culture. This can be found at https://www.veli-pekkalehtola.fi/linkit/ There you can also find his book Saamelaiset – historia, yhteiskunta, taide (in Finnish only) which offers a good general understanding of the themes https://www.veli-pekkalehtola.fi/UserFiles/files/lopullinen_ss1-304_SAAMELAISET_0509.pdf
