Assignment 5: Analyse your audience
Completion requirements
Due: Wednesday, 3 February 2021, 11:55 PM
For your talk to succeed, you need to consider how it relates to your audience. This aspect includes having a good understanding of the target audience. Thus, you need to talk with them to find out answers to the questions below.
Now, interview a friend, relative, neighbour, classmate or anyone who could give you a non-expert view on your topic. As you do this activity, ask the questions below and get answers to them. Write down the answers for each question - you don't need to include who said what - just the information that helps you understand how to tailor your talk to the target audience.
Some questions to consider:
- Who did you talk to?
- What do they want to know about your topic? List questions that they have.
- What do they hate/fear? List objections or emotional comments that might cause them to reject what you are saying.
- What do they like/need? List likes and needs that can translate into benefits that outweigh the objections.
- What concepts are unfamiliar to them? List concepts that need explaining.
- What do they already know? List concepts that you can use to explain the unfamiliar ones. Plus, list old news that you don’t need to bother with.
- How does your topic connection to the day-to-day lives of your target audience? If it doesn’t, what connection could you make to convey the relevance of your topic to this audience (i.e. Why should they care? Why should they be interested in listening?)
