Assignment 7: Develop a message map
Skills practised
- Applying the rule of three since three items are easily remembered in short-term memory
- Creating three messages that support the overall core message
Illustrating each key message with details (e.g. stories, examples, anecdotes, statistics)
Instructions
Look at your core message from assignment 6.
Now, create three messages that support the core message. In other words, write down three supporting statements or explanatory points.
Now, apply the rule of three to each supporting statement, limiting the word count to a maximum of three words for each one.
Next, add supporting details to each key message. Supporting details include short stories, examples, anecdotes, and/or statistics that help engage your listener – connecting them to your overall message in a meaningful way.
Lastly, state the purpose of your talk, and check that your ideas fit your intended purpose and target audience.
Note: When you finish, you have a message map, divided into three parts, each of which has three supporting details as illustrative support. The result is a clear, snapshot view of what your listener needs to know. Creating a message map is an effective way to ensure your presentation is organized, meaningful, and not too long.
Now, think about how to start and end your talk. In the beginning, it is important to grab the audience's attention and in the end you want to make your message memorable. One way of doing this is to look at your introduction and return to it in your conclusion. Consider the following. What is your story? How does it begin and end? And, how does it relate to the audience?
Submit your message map as a Word docx or pdf. You do not need to write out the presentation in full; you only need to make your overall plan clear.
