Assignment 6 - Your liveability metrics vs. LIVCY
Completion requirements
Due: Friday, 25 June 2021, 11:59 PM
In this exercise you will evaluate a (currently in early apha but soon-to-be commercial) liveability service LIVCY by Ramboll to your own liveability matrix you did back in exercise 2. This exercise will be done individually.
As the tool is early alpha, remember that there might be glitches and slow response times (for example changing from municipal view "kunnat" to cell view "ruudut" takes a while).
Note: unfortunately the tool has not been translated thoroughly so international students will have to use Google Translate or similar service to help you interpret some of the content. We recommend you keep two windows open side by side for easy interpretation (as shown here):
Practical steps
After the lecture, your task is to open the LIVCY tool and browse around as much as the service currently allows. The login is:

The tool is read-only in the sense that it does not yet allow you to construct new metrics nor add plans or modify content.

Submission and Evaluation
Prepare 1-2 A4 slides where you comment on the following:
Return format
The evaluation notes should be returned as a simple PDF document.
- UX, what works and what definitely could be improved? Why?
- Are the levels of granularity (municipalities, postal code areas, cells) sufficient to help a planner in solving the issues of a detailed plan in the scale of the previous Uusmäki exercise? Why?
- Is the LIVCY-index as a single aggregated liveability metric useful or is it too vague? Why?
- Do you perceive there to be biases in the index (for example, busy city centers automatically getting high ranking and calm nature areas getting low ranking)?
- Can you deduce or guess what kind of liveability LIVCY is promoting, i.e. what kind of steering force is it applying to plans where it is utilized?
- What is your assessment on the accessibility metric of LIVCY?
- What is your assessment on the density metrics of LIVCY?
- Important: how does LIVCY compare to your own matrix cell based liveability metric you did in exercise 2 (regarding substance, i.e. the quality of the metrics)?
Return format
The evaluation notes should be returned as a simple PDF document.
Evaluation
- We ask everyone to be ready to elaborate verbally (just with a couple of sentences):
- What kind of intended/unintended steering effects LIVCY might have on plans where it is used?
- How does LIVCY compare to your own liveability matrix (regarding substance)? Where is it better? Where is it worse?
