Practical interview and writing up exercise - due 31.3. NOTE DELAYED DEADLINE
Do some interviewing in a way that suits your own needs, and in the style of "interviewing plus". The guidelines are loose and you should read relevant background material, but the emphasis is on making good use of both the interview and the practice of reporting on it. This will require that you at least:
- Think about how a non-standard interview would fit into the wider research aims that you and your field are interested in.
- Think about how much detail a research partner would need to make use of your reporting.
Before you start, read Anne Warren ‘Qualitative
interviewing’ from the SAGE resource (& pdf). Also consider other relevant resources from your own field or from the huge literature on qualitative methods. (You can certainly use literature from beyond this course!)
Then, do the exercise, ideally a walking or object interview
or a wardrobe study. Render
it into notes for later use.
(You may also discuss doing some other interview-plus-type exercise that is useful to you. Depending on where you are in your own research, you may also invite one of the others on the course to be your interviewee.)
Spend some time considering what you could get out of this exercise.
Spend some time preparing questions and technical aids.
Note that enlisting an interviewee also
takes time.
Do the exercise ensuring that you have adequate meta-data to be able to make use of your efforts later.
WHAT TO SUBMIT
A clear written report – not a transcript – of the interview, as if to a research
partner. Max. length 3 pages excluding images.
On a separate
page (about 1 page), briefly contextualize your submission and note any key insights
or problems that emerged. Insert this at the start of your submission.
You may include images, not sound or video, in your submission.
You will receive feedback on your work.
Assessment criteria will necessarily be generic and context-specific and in any case primarily designed to be useful to you, nobody else. However, do get the assignment in on time, do be honest, clear and concise in your contextualization, and above all, in the report of the interview, include sufficient detail (thickness) for it to be useful for a future user, either yourself or someone else.
