3. Introduction structure
There is no standard pattern for an introduction as it depends on the type of essay or research you are doing.
According to Bailey (2015), a common structure is as follows:
a. defining key terms
b. giving relevant background information
c. review work by other writers on the same topic
d. purpose of the paper
e. your research method(s)
f. any limitations of your study
g. an outline of your paper
This structure relates very much to writing an academic paper for a thesis or a journal article. But for an essay for school or for a coursework essay, you can reduce it a lot. The core 4 elements are:
- general introductory statement e.g. Currently, there are...
- general background to the topic e.g. Since 1950 there has been...
- your purpose e.g. In this essay I will demonstrate that...
- your outline/methods, e.g. Firstly I will examine....Secondly,....\
TASK: Submit an introductory paragraph you have written for school,
college or university and identify the structure (e.g. types of
sentences) you used.
