Assignment for Session on Sleep
How would you describe the relationship between sleep and work in the post-industrial economy? Automation and Lights-out manufacturing, a non-descript non-time in which sleep, consumption and work all meld together as Johnathan Crary depicts it, the denaturalization of the biological clock, Screen-light moderating apps, sleep inducing and meditative apps, sleep pods (whether in sci-fi movies or more down to earth ones in Airports) – all these technologies, ideas about time, illumination (lighting systems) and the human body as a site of intervention provide images of an ongoing adaption to a new kind of clock. Draw on these images or/and others in the talk or/and your own research to elaborate on the ever-changing relationships between sleep, work, light, dark, attention and wakefulness.
