Workshop 2. Adaptability and Anticipatory design
Task: How can we design for an unpredictable future?
You have explored the different qualities of our site (Workshop 1.) and now we ask you to take on the work of another team, and consider these qualities as objects of change and design. Describe the qualities through the concepts of Fixity & Flexibility, answer the questions:
- What qualities of the site are more Fixed (unchanging or hard to change), what more Flexible (fluid, easier to change)?
- What are the tools of design that can be used for effecting change in the qualities?
Consider these questions by using relevant timeframes for your topic – days, seasons, years, decades, centuries.
Qualities to focus on (new topics for the teams)
Team 6: Flora & Fauna - Vegetable and animal life
Team 1: Topography & the Blue Network - Ground forms and water circulation
Team 2: The Built Environment - Buildings and structures
Team 3: Social & Cultural - Demography and identity
Team 4: Infrastructure & Services - Enabling elements and the functional mix
Team 5: Mobility & Connections - Routes of different flows
Materials from Workshop 1: Workshop 1. Materials
The presentation
The form of the presentation is free (number of pages, presentation methods, etc.) except these conditions: the file format has to be .pdf; and your presentation has to end with one 'map' (A3 scale 1:2000, in the base map on the layer 'study area' - also framed in on the CAD layout page. The area also shown in the file Basemap_A3_2000.pdf), where you show your main findings concerning the fixity or flexibility of the qualities of the site.
The presentation should contain only material you produce yourself - text, analytical drawings, maps, etc. (these can be based on existing material, like the base map or satellite images).
Keep the presentation short - be prepared to present the work in 10 minutes. All members of the team should speak during the presentation, but it will be efficient if only one member of the team shares the screen.
Goal of the Workshop
By analyzing the different qualities of our site through the lenses of fixity and flexibility, we get a sense of the systems of our site as objects of design that can be affected to various degrees - and this understanding will be a foundation for exploring the future potentials of our site.
Upload the presentation as a pdf-file before noon, on the 9th of February.
