Pre-class exercise 8
In lecture 8, we move from RCT:s to research designs based on quasi- or natural experiments. We will continue with neighborhood effects as our empirical example. To facilitate discussion, please read this AEA Research Highlights article and answer the following questions:
1. Why does the author of the study Erik Chyn argue that the results from the MTO experiment (covered in lecture 7) substantially understate the importance of neighborhoods?
2. What are control and treatment groups in Chyn’s research design?
3. Why should we think that these groups were created as-if randomly?
Please recall that the idea of this exercise is just to give structure for your preparation, so please do not spend too much time in polishing your summaries. Evaluation will be on pass/fail basis. You can submit your summary through MyCourses "Assignments" section, and there is a hard deadline 15 minutes before the start of the class.
