Team Assignment (50% of Final Grade)
This team project requires you to critically evaluate and compare specific aspects of the CSR strategies of two companies under the headings listed below. Each team will be assigned a specific sector and asked to select two contrasting UNGC signatories from within that sector. The team must then conduct online research on the firms’ CSR activities, assessing them along the dimensions outlined below. You can think of this project as a live setting in which to evaluate the material we cover in class.
The output of the assignment is an in-class presentation on Friday May 13th The slides you use (with Powerpoint notes) should be submitted on MyCourses before 9am on that day. You should ensure that the first slide has all of your names, and that the final slide lists all the sources you used.
To produce the presentation, you will need to identify
and critically evaluate the CSR performance of two companies in your
allocated sector who are signatories to the UNGC. You can find a complete
list of the UNGC companies here:
https://www.unglobalcompact.org/what-is-gc/participants
Each student team will be assigned a specific sector, and your first task is to
go to the link above to explore the sector your team has been allocated,
so that you can choose two target companies form the companies listed there.
You will compare and contrast the two firms’ CSR activities under the headings
below. It’s important that you choose two companies about which you can get
plenty of information online, and that differ in some significant ways.
Your report and presentation should cover the headings A to E below, comparing, contrasting and critically evaluating each company’s performance under each heading. in each area. The main headings should be covered. The numbered questions are only there to get you started, and are not a comprehensive list of requirements.

2. What are the CSR/sustainability issues affecting the sector as a whole?
3. Are there CSR/sustainability issues that are specific to either of your firms?
B. CSR Reporting
4. Describe the standards these firms for their CSR/sustainability communications?

D. Mirvis & Googins Framework
9. In some detail, explain exactly where you think each company sits on the Mirvis & Googins evolutionary framework. When placing companies on the Mirvis & Googins framework, bear in mind that a single company might be at different levels on each dimension. So for instance, a company might be at level one in terms of leadership, but transformative in other areas. Don’t forget a brief rationale as to why you are placing the companies where you place them.
E. Critique and Strategy
11. Rate the companies’ actions/inactions during the Covid-19 crisis?
11. What improvements could your firm make relative to its CSR strategy?
123. Identify any partners with whom the firms could collaborate.
logistics and tips:
The presentation will of necessity be brief. Here are some tips for making the best use of your allotted time:
- A decent graphic can save a lot of words, especially when it comes to comparing and contrasting your two companies
- Having smooth transitions between slides and sections can also save a minute or two
- The presentation needs to tell the story, so that the audience comes away with a sense of where the companies are under each of the headings, and how they contrast. If there’s backup detail, it can go in the notes to the slides.
- Practice, and have a script, so you don’t have too many ums and ahs, and hesitations.
