I believe Rutherford's experiment was familiar to you. Was there something new in the video for you? Have you solved scattering cross-sections, such as Rutherford's counts vs angle-plot, in some course? Have you done 3d (or at least 2d) scattering problems in any quantum mechanics courses? Actually, have you done any scattering calculations in classical mechanics? Any questions?

This week we will solve scattering problem using partial wave expansion. This is a method that is widely used in also other fields of physics and very important in many applications as well: interaction of em-fields with matter, how radar bounces off from objects, how sonar works, and for various medical applications.
Everybody has heard of the Rutherford's alpha-particle scattering experiment but it is nevertheless quite interesting to watch the following old (from 1960s!) educational video from the PSSC committee. The video is a bit longer than educational videos nowadays (38 minutes!) and it has rather slow pace, so grab some popcorn and take it easy ;)
