On week 3 we will discuss linear
response theory and Green's function technique for solving various
problems. Green's functions are central to quantum field theory, so we
are going to need them a lot. However, they are a very efficient
mathematical tool in all fields of physics. Watch the following Sixty Symbols youtube video regarding George Green's life and work (7 minutes):
Do
you recognize the concept of Green's function from some of your earlier
courses or work you have done? It should have appeared in some context
in partial differential equations-course, and possibly on some physics
courses as well. This week we are also going to need a little bit of complex analysis and especially Cauchy's residue theorem. Have you encountered or used complex contour integration in some earlier courses?
