Assignment 4 - Proposals perspective
During A4, you will focus on how to COMMUNICATE your proposal, and you will be introduced and tutored in visual and oral storytelling. In the process of developing your proposal story, your idea will become sharper as well as strongly grounded in the research that you've done. A persuasive story is about a more than a great idea... it's also about motivating stakeholders, evidence-based argumentation and communication skills.
A4 starts on Tues 7 May and concludes on handing in the Final Report by 4 Jun.
In A4 you will:
Learn about and apply visualization and storytelling techniques.
Develop a VISUAL AND ORAL PRESENTATION as well as a written REPORT of your project and proposal.
Present and receive feedback from stakeholders durning the FINAL SHOW and, upon delivery of the Final Report, from teachers.
VISUAL AND ORAL PRESENTATION
7 May
You will test and develop your '3 minute story' in class, along with an outline and plan for the graphics, slides and oral script of the presentation of your proposal. Informing and guiding the morning will be designer and visual communications researcher Tania Rodriguez Kaarto, who will give a lecture on 'Visualization and Storytelling' and hands-on tasks discussed in class. Together with Tania and Ramia, you will also discuss your teamwork plan for the next weeks.
Between 7 May and 14 May
Expect that this last week before the Final Show is improvement of 'communicability'. This means that thus your proposal and presentation should be ready for the Dress Rehearsal! Extra tutorials with Ramia and/or Tania will be offered this week and in the week before the Final Show.
14 May DRESS REHEARSAL
Details of location and program to be announced
- You should become familiar and comfortable with AV (audio-visual) equipment, including projector, microphones, pointer/clicker etc., in order to decide who speaks and who stands where.

Your presentation at this stage should allow us to give feedback on your proposal, storyline and (at least preliminary) visuals and script. Your teachers will be there and will save their feedback and tips for the afternoon tutoring!
Morning program - location and agenda will be announced. This will involve full presentations by each group (15 min each, with brief comments to each other only) and teachers writing and collecting own comments.
Afternoon debrief - location and group slots will be announced. Hands-on tutoring on strengthening and communicating your argument orally and visually ; bring print-outs of your slides and your script if possible! Be prepared for revisions and options for further tutoring before the Final Show (reserve common time for group work).

CONTENTS
- Final Report is a summary of your activities and findings from the whole course.
Describe what you did, f.ex. number and types of interviews, observations, workshops, secondary/desktop research, analyses, etc. You are welcome to include interview protocols, transcripts, lists of sources, etc. in an appendix. Consider including images from your research, analysis and systems diagrams – use captions to describe the images and give photo credits. Define special terms such as 'affinity diagram', etc.. If you used novel methods for research or groupwork, do reflect on these!
Most importantly, describe what you discovered (what was new or surprising) and your insights.
Each description (of Human, Systems and Intervention blocks) can be about the same length as a Blog post (and you can cut&paste the blog post that you wrote into the report). However, shape the text in relation to your final proposal - how did you discover or conclude something that led to the final proposal?
- Overview of your proposal
Describe your final proposal. Key elements can include 'why?', 'what?', 'how?', etc., ie. the elements you used to structure your final presentation. This part of your report can be a written version of the script from your final presentation! Consider including images from your final presentation with captions. It should be clear for someone what type of proposal this is (design at a product, service, system or organizational level) and whether it is an incremental or radical transformation of the current situation.
FORMAT
Each group should write 1 report. If parts of your research was done in the supergroup, you can duplicate that information in each of your reports.
Remember your audience for the Final Report is your commissioners as well as teachers.
12-15 pages is an ideal length, there is no maximum page limit. Cover page should include names and contacts of group members (so that your stakeholders have these). Include a table of contents. For your bibliography, chose and be consistent with a standard format such as MLA or other.
On your cover page, include the copyright notice. Words, phrasing and imagery included in your public materials can be used according to the IP agreement that you signed, therefore also used by your ministry. Do not include confidential information, if such information is important for the report you can send it as a separate Appendix clearly marked with who can access the material. Remember that you cannot use copyrighted materials and to give citation for any quotes or images from others.
Turn in your report as PDF (max 15GB), if you would like to include .mov or other files, then ZIP all together in 1 file)
Send your report by email latest 4 Jun 17:00 to ramia.maze@aalto.fi.
When all Reports are approved, we will send these to each set of ministry contacts cc'ing you. You are welcome to follow up and take direct contacts with your stakeholders as you like!
