Palimpsest of Place
Mandatory course for students on the Urban Design Studio (ARK-E1021 - Studio Spring, Urban Design)
Understanding change and the dimension of time in the context of urban design is crucial when searching for answers to the acute challenges we are facing - whether dealing with natural or artificial systems.
The transformations of our material and cultural, natural and social, environments need to be described and imagined as processes in time, and our responses need to take into account this nature of our task: the urban is in constant transition and any design proposal needs to include time and duration or risk obsolescence.
The Urban Design Studio Lectures aims to focus on the ’palimpsest of place’ through a set of lectures probing the dimension of time in our environment.Completing the course entails attending the lectures, participating in discussion and submitting a written assignment at the end of the period, as well as presenting the assignment for the group. The assignment will be given at the start of the course, during the first session.
