Adaptive reuse is the process of reusing an existing building for a purpose other than that for which it was originally built or designed. Applying the adaptive reuse strategy extends the lifespan of a building. As an alternative to new construction, it is a fundamentally sustainable design strategy in line with the principles of the circular economy.
We have a real client and concrete buildings that need to be planned. This year we are looking for a new use for the airport buildings in Malmi. The current and remaining buildings were built in the 1930s and lost their actual function when flight operations ceased in 2019. The buildings are protected as buildings of urban, architectural and historical value and should be preserved. How can the step into the future be successful? What could be made of it and how?
