Origami-artist Paul Jackson’s Corrugations workshop – Fold Project (fold-project.com)
5 full days of group workshops and personal creative experimentation, the Course aims to introduce the language and multi-disciplinary creative potential of flexible folded surfaces and flexible folded forms, in packaging, engineering, math and design.
We have reserved space for 13 students and the workshop includes also participants from the FOLD project.
It is required that attendees commit to attend for the full 5-days.
Basic materials and equipment will be provided, though you should also bring a laptop with CAD software installed.
DAY ONE
An introduction to the Miura-ori (M) corrugation system,
Beginning with very simple examples and progressing to complex and creative variations, attendees will make M samples by hand using copy paper. Variables such as changing the angle of the folds and mirror-image patterns will be introduced, expanding the creative parameters of the basic M crease patterns to create both flat and curved corrugated surfaces.
Towards the end of the day, attendees will begin to work with folded M grids.
DAY TWO
An introduction to the Yoshimura (Y) corrugation system.
The structure of the day will be similar to Day One: the Y system will be introduced with very basic examples and as the day progresses, more complex variables will be introduced.
Whereas the M system creates relief surfaces, the Y system creates arches, cylinders and spheres. Learning these 2 systems will teach attendees how to create flexible 2-D surfaces and flexible 3-D forms.
DAY THREE
An introduction to the Kresling (K) corrugation system. In a manner similar to Day One and Day Two, the K system will be introduced simply and as the day progresses, complex variables will be introduced.
Towards the end of the day, attendees will be introduced to 3 ways in which they can make M, Y and K crease patterns by 3 different methods:
1. By hand
2. By drawing them on paper using simple technical drawing equipment
3. By using CAD software
DAY FOUR
Attendees will be encouraged to explore M, Y and/or K crease patterns for themselves, by hand, by making drawings or by creating crease patterns using CAD software.
There will be opportunities to cut/fold CAD=generated crease patterns using a vinyl cutter and a large laser plotter. However, attendees will be encouraged to quickly explore novel surfaces and forms, in preference to creating a large, multi-repeat 'masterpiece'.
DAY FIVE
A continuation of Day Four.
The week will conclude with a final presentation, discussion and mini exhibition.
