CLAIM + REASON = THESIS STATEMENT

·      Must pass the “so what?” test

·      Must have an argumentative edge.  Often contains words like “ought,” or “should” or “must” or “needs to” in the CLAIM and then the word “because.”

·      Should be at the end of your intro.  Later, when you've got more experience, you can try other places. For now, play it safe.

·      Often provides a planning tool for the writer and a “roadmap” for the reader

·      Answers a specific question and explains how you’ll support your argument

Try these patterns of development, too:

1.               Something [does something] because [reasons].

2.              Because [reasons], [something] does [something].

3.              Although [opposing evidence], [reasons] show [something] [does something].
