The goal is to introduce students to high-quality research talks and expose them to the potential of future academic directions they could take. This class aims to do so while providing as much freedom as feasible.

This class is taught by Samuel Kaski and Sammie Katt. Please contact Sammie on his Aalto email for any questions regarding the course.

Format

This class consists of attending and writing assignments on ELLIS Distinguished Lectures (and other selected) talks. The participant must attend and write an assignment on at least 5 talks for 1 ECT

Registration

We are limiting the maximum number of students to 30. If more students want to attend, the selection will be made based on the amount and average grade of level machine learning courses, so make sure to provide your transcript when registering. (email Sammie)

Grading

The (pass/fall) grade is based on the assignments on each attended talk. Your writing should reflect that you attended the talk and actively engaged with its topic, in addition to delivering satisfactory quality on the following criteria:

  • Structure and organization
  • Spelling and sentence structure
  • Understanding of scientific content
  • Clarity of delivery

You are expected to submit assignments at most 1 week after the corresponding talk.
