If you are not familiar with using GIS software, such as ArcGIS, you'll get a better start with the assignments if you do little training first. Let's use the materials provided by ESRI, the company behind ArcGIS.

First of all, if you don't have a slightest idea of what geoinformatics is and why it is worth to learn using GIS, start at http://www.esri.com/what-is-gis. An example of how it all works is given at http://www.esri.com/what-is-gis/howgisworks - notice the "Try It Yourself!" example at the bottom of the page.

Then, go through an online course Getting started with GIS. It is estimated to take 4 hours, but you may skip the first section and save a little time. So start directly at "What is GIS data" and continue from there on.

  • The course is free but you need to sign in for an account. Just click "Go to course" and you'll get the needed instructions.
  • You also need the ArcGIS software for the course (you can skip the ArcGIS Online with the first section).
    You can either
    • use a computer in one of the computer classrooms that have the software installed. These areA046A ja A046 in Architecture department (Otakaari 1), Y344, U257, U344, and U351 in Kanditalo (Otakaari1), and Maari-B, Maari-E, Maari-K in Maarintalo (Sähkömiehentie 3) - changes by the IT Services are possible.
    • or you can download the software on your own computer via Download.aalto.fi,
    • or you can download a trial version from ESRI.

If you feel need for more training, the assignments of the C-module of ENG-A1001 (GIS module) with related data and detailed instructions from last spring are available in MyCourses > ENG-A1001 > ArcGIS (C).
