Week 1. Photoediting

On the first week we get to know what is a digital image in the form of a bitmap and learn how to use photo-editing software.

First watch these two lectures about the fundamentals of bitmaps.

Photo editing software

You should watch the videos twice: first skim through them for overview. After this try all of the features that were introduced on the video with a image that is similar than the one on the demo. Pause the video when needed.

Week 1 Assignments

You can use the demo videos as a guide or first do the assignment and watch the demos afterwards

The assignments grant you maximum 5 or 10 points. The sum of points from the assignments define your grade. 

The assignment KX3. Abomination is an Extra assignment and a special one. It grants you extra points but doesn't count toward the minimum mandatory 14 returned assignments.  It should not be returned yet but after you have learned more tools. You can however start acquiring the necessary photos for it

Objective

The goal is to learn the most important Photoshop tools and learn how to deep etch - remove a image from its background.

Tools	Selection: Marquee, Quick Selection, Lasso, Magic Wand Select and mask: Feather, Edge detection, Smooth Adjustments: Curves, Brightness & Contrast, Color Balance, Hue/Saturation
Assignment	Combine an image of a planet to any other background.
Images	Online (preferably CC-licensed)
Instructions	You can have the planet placed on any background The background layer should be big enough (1000+ pixels)
Assessment criteria	The transition/edge between the images is hard to tell The lighting/colours in the images match
Time to be used	1-2 hours

K2. Chimeira */10

Photo manipulation / Photoshop

Objective

The goal is to learn use the most important Photoshop tools for photo manipulation

Tools	Selection tools: Marquee, Quick Selection, Lasso, Magic Wand Select and mask:  Feather, Edge detection, Smooth Adjustments: Curves, Brightness & Contrast, Color Balance, Hue/Saturation Layer Blending modes
Assignment	Create a new animal by combining at least two animals
Images	Online (preferably CC-licensed)
Instructions	Try to find matching animals The first animal should have enough background The background layer should be big enough (1000+ pixels)
Assessment criteria	The transition/edge between the images is hard to tell The new animal looks coherent
Time to be used	3 hours

Photo manipulation / Photoshop

Objective

The goal is to learn to use Photoshop tools for more complicated. On week 1, we only collect / take images

Instructions	Take a photo for basis for the assignment Search for images
Assessment criteria	The transition/edge between the images is hard to tell Manipulation and collage has been used in a imaginative and challenging way The image is full of mood and is horrific
Time to be used	3 hours
