This task consists of developing concepts and prototypes for development and potential product applications of a cellulose based material, which will be presented to the students during a lecture by Professor Olli Dahl during the first day of the course. As a new material, there exists limited knowledge about this material’s performance in different manufacturing processes, the characteristics of the processed material, and its application area.

The students are divided into small groups and each group is provided samples of different variations of this cellulose-based material by the school of Chemical Engineering to conduct “quick and dirty” testing to gain a better understanding of the material.

The material tests serve as inspirations towards a systematic idea generation of possible application areas for the material. The students are expected to present these prototypes and initial ideas of application during the mid-term critique.

Successively, the students further delve into developing product concepts based on their material tests for the final critique. In the final critique the students demonstrate the outcome of their work through a presentation and an exhibition within Väre premises, in which the students present their work as posters and material samples.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

All students and faculty involved in the 2019 course have to register in WebOodi and complete the CHEM-E0140 Laboratory Safety Course through MyCourses before February 28th

The registration for the course opens on February 25th. This is an online course, which consists of a virtual lab space + digital exam, covering the basic lab safety issues.

The students will not be granted access to the ChemArts Laboratories or the ABio laboratories to conduct their material tests unless this safety course is accomplished.
