This week we'll do vector inking and colouring.
For inking, we learn about creating vector lines and how to use profiled strokes.
For colouring we learn the basics of gradients.

After this week you should be friends (or enemies) with the pen tool :)

After this you can study how stroke width profiles work and then proceed to the inking assignment


You can watch the next lecture after some time into the assignment or beforehand.
This lecture shows how to change the profiled strokes with the width tool.
You might not need this tool at all, but you should create the profiles shown on the video.

Instructions

  • Create an Artboard in Illustrator (Print A4)
  • Paste or Place the image, don't Open it
  • Lock the layer (empty square next to the visibility symbol in layers panel) you pasted the file into and create a new layer on top
  • Create the strokes with a colour that is easy to tell form the background
  • Start from the eyes and proceed outwards. You don't need ink the whole image
  • Try to make perfect lines
  • The lines can intersect each other and you can have more than one lines next to each other

Assessment criteria

  1. The lines are of good length and width

  2. Anchor points are in smart places and their type is clear (corners, gentle arch, recurve etc.)

  3. In the loose areas of the sketch there is creative decisions made so that the image looks good.

Instructions

  • Create an Artboard in Illustrator (Print A4)
  • Paste or Place the image, don't Open it
  • Lock the layer (empty square next to the visibility symbol in layers panel) you pasted the file into and create a new layer on top
  • Create the forms in a smart order
  • Only form the edge that doesn't go underneath other forms
  • Use the Pathfinder for getting the combined edge of forms (copy the bottom form and intersect the copy with the form on top)
  • Undo every time you do a small mistake (this would be every 10 seconds)

Assessment criteria

  1. You have a basic colour and shadows and highlights

  2. The colour are chosen so that the work looks coherent

  3. A natural direction of light can be seen from the lights
