This week we will start painting, creating areas with large brushes.
In the painting exercises we try to be as profound as possible, so we will start painting with simple tools.
Please don't use any tools that are not part of the assignments tool selection.

You'll first learn the basics of painting in two lectures

  • Using the magic palette knife (the eye-dropper)
  • Positive-negative workflow
  • Managing opacity and mixing and blending colours

You will use these skills in the two assignments, which are both done in grayscale.

Remember to read the briefs and do the assignment exactly as is asked.
Check the "time to be used" for an idea of how far you should do the assignment.

You might want to check the demos first and then start working. Remember that the demos are sped around 10-15 times..

For the lectures, you can use an A4 sized canvas.

Goal
Learn the basic techniques of painting

Tools

Brush and (alt-click) Eye-dropper

Assignment

Paint the ball on the reference

Brush setup

Paint brush
Size 100-500px, Hardness 100%
Opacity 30% when mixing/blending, 60-80% when painting
Opacity 5-10 can be used in glazes
(Flow 100% and Smoothing 0%)
Colour: Start with black and white, mix grayscale on the canvas
“Always use pressure for size” pressed

Instructions

  • Make the canvas the same size as the model
  • Paint with large brush size > sharp edges are done with postive/negative working
  • Alt-click the colours from the canvas (start with a black and white spot

Assessment criteria

  1. The sphere is around the right place and the value changes can be seen
  2. Opacity is used reasonably (no low opacity mixes)
  3. Somewhere in the painting is a somewhat nice blend done with variable dabbing motions, not same direction strokes

Paint the gypsum statue on the reference
