Session #8: What makes sustainable entrepreneurship so hard? (II): Complexity.
With
this session, we will continue to looks at why sustainable
entrepreneurship is so hard. In this instance, we are going to look at
complexity through a case on Indigo Agriculture. Indigo has a
compelling set of goals, as articulated by the CEO: "First, how do we
meet the world's growing caloric needs? Second, how do
we do it sustainably? Third, how do we change people's behaviour around
food?" To do this, their central technology involves leveraging natural
microbes toreduce the amount of water and fertilizer needed while
increasing yields.
As
we will see though, things are not so straight forward. Simply
designing the product was not enough, and they had to intervene at
multiple points on the value chain. Moreover, even doing something as
fundamental as changing the way seeds are used may not be enough to
truly change the agriculture system, leading the company to consider an
ambitious initiative to remove 1,000,000,000,000 tons of carbon from the
atmosphere via regenerative agricultural practices. In short, Indigo has to do a lot of things to really change the system, and this is complex.
