Final writing assignment: Recommendation report

  • Topic: Recommendation
  • Patterns: Problem-solution, sentence definition, extended definition
  • Audience: Client (Decision-makers, non-expert)
  • Length: 500-600 words
  • Deadline: Submit to this Turnitin submission box by 12.30 on Thursday 6.6.24.

Write the final version of your text recommending a solution to a need of your client or a problem that has been detected in the current practices of your client.

Merge your earlier texts into one complete recommendation report and add the conclusion paragraph.

Use the content from the previous assignments, but modify the overall content and organization in any way necessary: restructure, reorganise and reword if necessary, and add/omit or shorten/expand to meet the criteria for this final report.

Remember to provide appropriate in-text references throughout the report in addition to including a polished list of references at the end of the text.

Structure of the report

INTRODUCTION (problem-solution)

The introduction is one paragraph where you provide the following information:

Situation

  • Describe briefly the wider context and relevance
  • Name who you are addressing this recommendation to (audience/client)
  • Explain the client’s present situation or current practices.

Problem

  • State what is lacking/needed/unsatisfactory in their current situation?

Solution

  • Name the solution that you recommend and link it to the identified problem or need.

Evaluation

  • Name the main benefit that justifies the new solution.

BODY (extended definition)

The body section defines, describes and motivates the recommended solution in terms of 3-4 key properties:

Sentence definition

  • Define the proposed solution in one sentence.

Extend the definition

  • Describe the solution based on 3-4 types of defining information (amplification methods).

CONCLUSION

The conclusion paragraph should:

  • (Re)state the recommendation
  • Explicitly link the solution back to the client’s original problem/need
  • Summarize your main argument(s) and justify the recommendation
  • Be brief and to the point.  Synthesize the key ideas using different language. Do not provide any new information!
