Learning Outcomes (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

Student will learn to observe built environment with regard to usability and accessibility. Student can recognize different user groups of buildings and learns basic terminology related user oriented space design.

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

A lecture course on user oriented space design. The course gives basic knowledge on usability, user experience and accessibility of spaces. Some design methods involving different user groups and co-design are presented.

Details on the course content (applies in this implementation): 

The course focus on user-experience of buildings. Public buildings have multiple functions and various user groups. The aim of the course is to evaluate, how design solutions affect user satisfaction.  Layout,  visual perception, lighting and acoustics affect the wayfinding and user-experience. Technology may improve the usability and access to information. Moreover, users of public buildings may have an impairment related to mobility, vision or hearing. The students will make a comprehensive evaluation of an existing building focusing on the topics of the course. This year the students will do in small groups a user assessment of the  Väre building.  

The course consists of lectures on topics of Universal Design, user involvement, and co-design as well as service architecture. Each lecture includes a small weakly task related to the topic. The task is related to the assessment of the building in small multidisciplinary groups. 

At the end of the course, the student will be more sensitive to the relation between users and spaces. The student will identify various user groups, different aspects of design having an effect on user experience.  The student will have some basic knowledge of user involvement in design projects, and Universal Design. 

The student will also have some practice on working in multidisciplinary teams. 

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

Working in pairs or in small groups. Observation and analyses of existing public spaces in relation to the theme of the course. Criteria: Attendance to course and active participation.

Elaboration of the evaluation criteria and methods, and acquainting students with the evaluation (applies in this implementation): 

The group will get peer assessment from other groups. The final assessment is done individually, and the grading is passed/failed.   The assignment, the group work, and attendance in the course will affect the grading.

4. opiskelijat, joilla kurssi kuuluu pääaineen/ohjelman vaihtoehtoisiin opintoihin, ja on opiskelijan HOPSissa aikataulutettu ko. lukuvuodelle
5. opiskelijat, joilla kurssi kuuluu pääaineen/ohjelman vaihtoehtoisiin opintoihin, ja joilla vaihtoehtoisia opintoja on tutkintovaatimusten mukaan vielä suorittamatta
6. opiskelijat, joilla kurssi kuuluu sivuaineen pakollisiin opintoihin

Kursseilla, jotka on tarkoitettu monialaisiksi, voidaan käyttää kurssin osaamistavoitteisiin soveltuvaa prioriteettijärjestystä (esim. UWAS-kurssit), huomioiden kuitenkin yliopiston velvoite mahdollistaa opiskelijan opintojen eteneminen ko. tutkinnon tavoiteajassa. Priorisointijärjestys ei toistaiseksi koske yhteisen opetuksen yksikön järjestämiä valinnaisia kursseja eikä tohtorikursseja.

Kurssille ottamisen priorisointipäätös ei vaikuta opettajan oikeuteen asettaa kurssille esitietovaatimuksia.
