CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The content of the course will involve looking at an Art & design practice and how adopting digital fabrication technologies and working with materials in new ways can create new business opportunities and potentials. We will case study the practices of Artist such as Tomas Saraceno, Olafur Elisson and Anish Kapoor and how their adoption of new materials and technologies have helped them  realise  their visions. In certain  instances, this created completely new methods of production and creation of new materials as a well unique way of using of material has led to new discoveries.As a creative practice grows in size, adoption of technology in the production is imminent, the question is can the technology become an active driver for the practice or remains as just another tool .

Assessment Methods and Criteria

  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    1. We will use the method learning by doing , so we will be making prototypes constantly. Depending on the material student will use different workshops. There will be 3 lectures . 
    2. Assessment will be based on the student participation and Attendance is compulsory. Final grades will be based on 50% attendance and ongoing studio work and 50% on the final work produced (which would be presentation)
    3. Course is mainly project work so no examination will be held.  (study method: lectures and project work)

    Assignments and group work = 57h

    UWAS course selection criteria: Registration order is not the primary selection criteria for this course. In order to ensure that students from different programs and schools of Aalto University may take UWAS courses, the selection is also based on the variety of students' disciplines. Master's students are also welcome.

    The course is based on Ashish's experience of working as a technology and material consultant to the artistic practice of Tomas Saraceno.
