Students can identify the main characteristics and typical urban structures of the historical development of cities. The students understand the range of tasks within urban planning. The study module acquaints the students with the principal literature in the field and provides practise in the basic skills of writing.

The study module presents the central background and development stages of world´s urban development and the concept of urbanity and, based on this, the range of tasks in urban planning.

Essay instructionsPick a city (+ 500 years old, outside of Finland at least for the Finnish students).
Find relevant literature and choose some promising entries for closer reading.
Elaborate on how the phenomena / driving forces we’ve discussed show in the city you picked.
Write 4 pages (font 12, spacing of rows 1,5,).
Add possible images and all mentioned references. They do not count into the 4 pages of text!
