LEARNING OUTCOMES
This course deepens and broadens students’ knowledge and conceptual understanding of a specific film genre. The course may also function as a theoretical basis for starting MA thesis work.
Conceptual skills
- students understand the concept of genre in filmmaking, and core features and narrative functions of the genre
- students gains deeper theoretical knowledge on a specific film genre
- students are able to critically analyze (in their professional role) artistic means to construct genre in filmmaking
Artistic expression and collaborative skills
- students understand genre as a shared creative instrument for collaborative world-building
- students identify the diverse means of using genre in cinematic narration e.g. genre-bending, hybrid genre
- students are able to critically apply their genre knowledge to renewing genre by their artistic interpretation

Content

The 2024 genre workshop course focuses on period drama genre. The course consists of theoretical exploration of the genre and conceptual framework on a chosen text.
Assessment Methods and Criteria

Active and regular participation to group working and lectures, accomplishment of given tasks and group reflection, self-reflection about the learning process during the workshop.
Workload

The course (3 cr) consists of multiple teaching methods e.g. activating lectures, group discussions, presentations, writing assignments, method analysis, peer learning, screenings, independent and group work. It requires attendance in contact sessions including group and independent work.

Registration for courses is confirmed by attending the first class of the course. Students who drop out of the course without good reason will fail the course. At least 80% participation in face-to-face teaching is mandatory to complete the course. If, due to absences, the student does not achieve the learning outcomes defined in the course description, the remaining 20% may have to be compensated as determined by the responsible teachers of
the course. All absences must be reported to the teachers in charge. The responsible teachers of the course will specify the necessary compensating assignments
