Osion kuvaus

The future has always been uncertain - above all because we can in no way predict and prepare for everything - but for many students the consequences of a pandemic have created even greater sense of uncertainty, especially when considering own future in relation to the challenges posed by state of the world. Uncertainty may also be awaken by concerns that the pandemic might not be a only and unique cause of upheaval, and the individual’s ability to make a difference might be limited. So how do you learn to live with uncertainty and focus your actions on what is relevant and meaningful?

    What is psychological inflexibility?

Does the following picture sound familiar - at least in some area of your life, or in some point in your past? If so, you have proven to be a human being! We all have some psychological inflexibility in us, and it might make it sometimes harder to deal with uncertainty, as well. So, what is it?

Even though we all have these inflexiblities in our lifes, it might cause as more harm in the longer run if our only way to deal with difficulties is through that cycle of inflexibility. So what does its opposite, psychological flexibility, mean, then? What kind of tools does it offer for dealing with uncertainty?

    • How to look ahead to the future?

When you decided to study in Aalto University you were probably thinking of  something along growing as a human, learning a professional identity, learning a job role, finding a career, succeeding to support yourself and feed your family, living a good life.

Then came Covid-19 and things changed: in the old normal you studied at campus, now you can make progress in your studies regardless of where you are.  In the old normal you used to spend your meaningful leisure time in several places with your favourite people, now you should practice physical distancing from people who are not from your household both indoor and outdoor spaces. However necessary physical distancing is, feeling of loneliness can cause stress and anxiety. Fear about what could happen can be overwhelming.
